Tinnitus Symptoms to Watch for

Tinnitus is a condition in which an individual can hear noises in the ear or head but there is no external noise. In other words, only the person suffering from tinnitus can hear those noises and no one else can. This condition can be incredibly frustrating to deal with, especially since others around them are not able to understand what they’re going through. There are a few basic symptoms of tinnitus which are most important to watch for.

The main symptom that people notice at first is a buzzing noise around their ears. The main symptom is a buzzing sound around the ears which persists or which may go away but then come back. Others hear more of a clicking or ringing noise which usually goes along to the beat of their heart. Tinnitus can get to be so intense that it keeps the person from dealing with their regular daily activities.

Anyone experiencing the symptoms of tinnitus will usually be checked first for hearing loss. This is a common cause of tinnitus and can actually be a good thing because with a hearing aid the tinnitus is likely to go away. When the symptoms of tinnitus strike seemingly out of nowhere, this is the most dangerous situation because it means that there is likely a serious health condition such as a tumor or aneurysm. A serious medical condition such as a tumor could be causing the condition and obviously cannot be left without treatment.

In the case of an aneurysm, this is most likely the issue if a person’s tinnitus noise is intense and in perfect rhythm with their heartbeat. When a person tells their doctor they think they’re exhibiting the symptoms of tinnitus, there are a few tests which may be used to make a proper diagnosis. That includes an X-ray to locate any structural problems as well as an evoked response audiometry test which is most often used on people with tinnitus in only one ear. More basic tests like blood pressure and blood tests are also usually called for and are used to check for conditions like hyperthyroidism.

Doctors try their best to determine the cause of a tinnitus condition first, to help them make the best choice on which treatment to use. However, in cases where this is not the result or where no cause is determined, there are different at-home treatments that patients are advised to try. Using anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications is often enough to treat tinnitus conditions or at least keep them under control. White noise machines are one of the most commonly suggested ideas by doctors, especially at night when you’re trying to go to bed and don’t want to be bothered by the noise of your tinnitus.
